The European Society of Veterinary Pathology (ESVP) and the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP) DEI Task Force (DEITF) was established to assess and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the European veterinary pathology community.

Individuals in the veterinary profession are experiencing significant mental health and wellbeing challenges. A holistic view of wellbeing, which encompasses both physical and mental health, underscores their interconnected nature.

Veterinary nurses and technicians experience burnout, which affects their mental and physical health, the likelihood of leaving their job, and their quality of work. Burnout is caused by workplace issues, and existing research has identified specific causes in veterinary nurses and technicians.

Although university education in Germany is without tuition fees, the parental educational background influences the decision to study as well as the choice of subjects, and is linked to challenges that students face during the course of study. However, little is known about these aspects in veterinary medicine. In this study, the differences between the first-generation students (FGS) and continuing-generation students (CGS) in veterinary medicine, as well as the challenges (study entrance, financial situation, concerns about the future), are examined in order to identify any need for supportive action.

The current generation of students is grappling with a significant mental health crisis, with implications that extend beyond campus boundaries to affect society as a whole. This crisis manifests in various forms, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts.
